2012 the Year in Review

SamFlegal_treephoto

Welcome back strangers and fans. Since I’m writing this, and you’re reading it, it’s safe to say the world did not end, yet again. Like so many I find myself looking back on the year that was. Overall I must say that 2012 was an excellent year! My first batch of professional work hit the market. Because of that work I got new clients, and I felt for the first time that I was a “real” illustrator.

This led me to have to re-think how I handled certain things—mostly it involved learning how to juggle clients and conventions, and still maintain a strong relationship with my family and friends. There were some bumps along the way, but I’ve learned to really appreciate my time. I have finally moved beyond my younger ideas about “killing time.” Now I “make time” both for work and for fun, something I think is important no matter what you do. I also feel more present in my life than ever before. I don’t want to get too preachy, but live your life to the fullest. You owe it to yourself.

All right enough sappy looking-back-and-finding-meaning stuff. Here’s the stats:

In 2012 I…

… completed 12 new paintings

… attended 24 conventions (some as a guest!)

… received the Juror’s Choice Award at Gen Con for my Orc Charge Painting

… got to see my art on game boxes and on cards at my local gaming store

… was asked to sign cards and other objects that my art appeared on

… gained recognition from many of my mentors and heroes as making rapid progress over the last 4-5 years

… had a blog post that got over 250 views! (Thank You L5R fans!)

… funded my first Kickstarter project

… produced my first art book (Thank You Kickstarter supporters!)

… sold several original paintings and drawings!

There it is. All laid out in black and white. Thank You to everyone who helped support me and contributed to my art and my growth. Most of all, Thank You to my WIFE!!!

2012 was good, but 2013 is looking to be even better. Glad the Mayans were wrong, because I got stuff to do!
