L5R Art – Moto Daiken
Moto Daiken is a Unicorn Clan Death Priest from the latest Legend of the Five Rings Set, Gates of Chaos. Daiken was my first Unicorn clan card. The art order asked for “An intimidating magic using priest surrounded by spirits with a skull motif mask or face paint. This guy has an ability that sends the spirits of the dead out to hunt and kill his enemies.” Naturally I was excited, skull motif mask surrounded by ancestor spirits killin’ folk! I’m in!
I decided to make the priest a lady, at the time I was painting lots of men and I wanted to paint a woman. I specifically wanted to try my hand at doing a sexy intimidating woman. I also had a blast with the abstract quality of the spirits killing scorpion clan guys in the background. My goal was to contrast an abstract soft background with the more crisp figure. All in all I’m pleased with how it turned out.
The drawings from Gates of Chaos marked a change in my process. I started working on toned paper for the final drawing and have not gone back. This drawing will be featured in my new drawing book. Check it out on KICKSTARTER. ONLY 4 DAYS to get your copy!
