L5R Art – Iweko Shibatsu, Imperial Heir
In addition to getting to design and paint a courtly version of Daigotsu Kanpeki I was also asked to do Kanpeki’s protégée Shibatsu. Because Shibatsu appeared on Kanpeki’s card the Art Director, Adrian Burton, wanted a companion image to appear on Shibatsu’s card.
The basic idea was to show Shibatsu and Kanpeki strolling through a japanese garden. I actually found this quite hard. Normally Kanpeki is thought of as snapping his enemies like twigs, destroying all in his wake, that sort of thing. All in all I think it worked out. I like the way Kanpeki looms behind the young heir.
The original was painted in oil at 18 x 24.
