Wudan – Female Warrior Tattoo

Wudan by Sam Flegal

A friend commissioned a tattoo design from me recently. As I’ve said in the past this is not something I do often, but if the person is cool (which she is) and if the subject matter is right (which it was), I will take on tattoo designs from time to time. And boy am I glad I did! The subject matter was a Female Warrior or General from Chinese Opera called the Wudan. She represents female strength and power on the battlefield, but being a character from theatre has quite the elaborate costume.

I really got into the design. I wanted something that flowed showing both the movement of a dancer and of a warrior. I’ve been getting more inking commissions of late, and I find it’s a medium I really enjoy. There is something wonderful about composing an entire image in black and white. I inked the image mostly with brushes, but with a few pens for precision. It turned out so well that I wanted to share. I hope you like it too, my friend loved it!
