Pagan Elements
A pagan circle in Australia commissioned me to do a painting of various Norse spirits as representatives of the elements. This was an interesting dilemma because their spiritual understanding and associations with the creatures to be represented were different than my own. At first I thought this would be challenging, but after a long philosophical discussion via e-mail I came to understand a different view.
In this painting Huginn and Munnin (Thought and Memory), Odin’s ravens, represent the element of air. Next up is the world serpent, Jormungander, representing the element of water. In opposition sits Fenrir rising up out of the fire he represents. Finally Sleipnir, Odin’s eight legged steed, represents the element of earth.
