“Freyja is the most renowned of the goddesses; she has in heaven the dwelling called Fólkvangr, and wheresoever she rides to the strife, she has one-half of the kill, and Odin half, as is here said:
Fólkvangr ‘t is called, | where Freyja rules
Degrees of seats in the hall;
Half the kill | she keepeth each day,
And half Odin hath.
– Gylfaginning, Translated by Arthur Gilchrist Brodeur
This is the largest oil painting I have ever done. It measures 48″ x 29″. It was incredibly challenging, but I feel that I have learned so much in its creation. I’ve wanted to do a Freyja painting for awhile. She is the goddess I get asked the most about.
I didn’t want to do the traditional image of Freyja as the beautiful Goddess of love. I wanted to do battle ready badass Freyja riding atop her battle swine, out to collect the dead that are half her’s by right. I feel like I accomplished that, I hope you like the painting as much as I liked making it.
If you want to read more about my thought process behind this painting you can do so on the Gods and Goddesses page.
Only 25 Limited Edition Prints will be made for “Freyja’s Due.”
